Wheel Loaders are primarily used to load, carry and
dump materials into dump trucks, bins and hoppers.
They are extremely good for carrying materials over
short distances on irregular ground. Because wheel
loaders are so versatile, they are used in the most
diversified applications. Each loader bucket can be
designed to suit each application, material density,
customer requirements and machine capability.
The advantage of the Mechanical or hydraulic quick
coupler is they allow quick change of attachments
encouraging the operator to choose an attachment
that is most suited for the job at hand. The
couplers operate with two lock pins that engage in
the lower holes of the bucket or attachment hangers.
The quick coupler can be designed to pick up
attachments from either Volvo or Caterpillar IT
range of standard attachments as well as the
existing attachments designed for the machine once
the bucket hangers have been modified.
In the installation of the Mechanical Coupler, there
is no hydraulics required, resulting in no extra
costs associated with running hydraulic lines,
valves, switches, etc., however it requires the
operator to exit from the wheel loader cab to
release the bucket pins manually with a lever. The
hydraulic quick coupler allows the operator to
release the bucket from the inside of the wheel
loader cab.

What to look for in a wheel loader Quick Coupler
attachment
The quick coupler needs to be compact in design to
ensure a limited extension of the wheel loader
bucket attached to it as, the shorter the “pin to
point” on the bucket, the better the bucket digs
(referred to as bucket breakout force).
A choice of Mechanical or Hydraulic Coupler.
The construction of the quick coupler is consistent
with the application. Buckets designed for one
particular application will not perform best in
another application. If fitting existing buckets to
a quick coupler, it is imperative that the design of
the bucket be matched to the particular loader and
application prior to being modified.
Loader bucket capacities are defined by either:
The Struck Capacity Vs which is approximately the
waterline capacity
The SAE rated capacity or Heaped Capacity is with
the bucket heaped with the pile at 1:2
SAE rated or heaped capacity is the one most
commonly used. As an approximation, rated capacity
is 1.17 X Struck Capacity.
Loader buckets are designed to suit specific
applications and machine types. A bucket for one
wheel loader will not fit another machine unless it
is exactly the same make and model of wheel loader.
