The bucket thumb is an attachment that allows the
holding or clamping of objects between the bucket
and the thumb. The thumb is hydraulically activated
and allows the clamped object to be curled around
the stick between the bucket and the clamp to allow
accurate placement of objects.
The hydraulic bucket thumb adds to the versatility
of the excavator, as it provides grappling for long
and awkward objects, can be locked back up the
excavator dipper arm when not in use, and does not
impede the use of the excavator bucket, controlled
from a foot pedal in the excavator.
The bucket thumb can be designed to be used against
the bucket edge or bucket teeth, depending on the
customer’s preference.
There are two types of hydraulic bucket thumbs, a
non-linkage type and a conventional idler arm
linkage type which allows greater travel around the
end of the excavator dipper arm.

Hydraulic Thumb Design
Our engineers calculate the proportions for the
materials being loaded with the lifting capacity of
the machine.
Fitted with replaceable bushes at all pivot points
and induction hardened pins with internal grease
passages to allow regular greasing to all pivot
points
Rotational operation around the dipper arm
allowing accurate placement of objects
High performance cylinders with quality Hallite
seals
The serrated edge ensures that the load has a
minimum possibility of slippage
Compact design – thumb folds up the dipper arm
when not in use
Can be fitted to machines with or without quickhitches
All

bucket thumbs are made from
Bisalloy, which is 3.1 times stronger than mild
steel. This ensures more strength and less weight
which means greater capacities, less fuel
consumption and less load on the excavator.
The Benefits
The benefits you will experience are:
Earn more money moving more material and different
material types
Reduce fuel costs – normally hard to load objects
require less time loading, carrying and unloading.
Increased safety as there is no need to balance
large loads on bucket edges
Save time – easier loading means less time behind
the controls, saving fuel and employee costs
Reduced servicing costs because the excavator is
not working as hard
Bisalloy construction means longer working life of
the attachment and less downtime carrying out
expensive repairs or modifications
What you get as standard
All of our bucket thumbs are delivered with serrated
edges and serrated bucket edges (if required) and
dipper arm bracket.
